What does this policy cover
This policy applies only to UNICEF's U-Report On The Move platform.
Taking care of your information is important to U-Report On The Move. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use and store your personal information, and the steps we take to protect it.
Please read this policy carefully before using U-Report On The Move channels. By using U-Report On The Move, you agree to all the rules set out in this policy.
If you are under 16 years old, we ask you to speak with a guardian/parent or a trusted adult before using this platform, so that they understand and agree to you sharing information with us.
⚠️ Important: Never share information that could identify you, such as your full name, address, school name, phone number, email address or social media profiles.
Any personal information you post publicly on U-Report On The Move social media can be seen by others. We are not responsible for how others might use that information, so please be careful about what you post. If you post personal information on our social media accounts, we will remove it as soon as possible.
In this policy, when we say "we", "us" or "our" we mean UNICEF. When we say "you" or "user" we mean you as the person using U-Report On The Move.
What is not covered by this policy
This policy does not cover:
• Information collected by the messaging apps and social media platforms you use to interact with U-Report On The Move (such as WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.). Those apps have their own privacy policies.
• Websites of other organisations that U-Report On The Move may link to. Those sites also have their own privacy policies.
We strongly encourage you to read the privacy policies of other apps and sites before using them.
How do we protect your personal information?
We are committed to collecting the minimum amount of personal information possible. The goal of U-Report On The Move is to help you, make you feel safe, and support you in getting help if you need it.
Here are our commitments:
• We will not use your personal information for purposes other than those described in this policy.
• We will never sell your personal information.
• We will not keep your personal information for longer than necessary.
• We take all reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information.
• When we use external companies to host U-Report On The Move information, we ensure they follow security standards similar to ours.
What kind of information does U-Report On The Move collect?
"Personal information" means any information that allows us to identify a person, such as name, identification number, geolocation, or online identifier.
A. When you register for U-Report On The Move
The registration process for U-Report On The Move will not ask you for personal information. We will only ask you for:
• Your country of origin
• The region you are currently in
• Your age
• Your gender
This information helps UNICEF and its partners understand who uses U-Report On The Move and send you information that is relevant to you.
B. Information collected automatically
When you register or interact with U-Report On The Move, the platform automatically records:
• Your social media ID (if you use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or other messaging apps).
This information allows U-Report On The Move to communicate with you, invite you to participate in polls, and send you useful information. U-Report On The Move managers will not know your identity: your phone number or username will not be accessible to them.
Note: if you use Facebook Messenger, the name of your Facebook account may be visible to U-Report On The Move managers, but it will not be used to identify you.
C. Information you share with U-Report On The Move
We also collect and use information you share through U-Report On The Move channels, including:
• Your responses to poll questions
• Your interactions with chatbots
• Other messages you send to the platform
This information will not include personal data unless you include it yourself. For this reason, we ask you not to include personal information when interacting with U-Report On The Move.
How we use the website and app
Website
When you visit our website, we automatically collect some information through cookies (small text files saved on your device). The information collected includes:
• Your IP address
• Your approximate location
• The type of browser you use
• Your device's operating system
• How you use the site
If you do not want cookies to be used, you can change your browser settings to decline them.
We use this information in aggregate (that is, as general data, not linked to individuals) to manage and improve the site and to prevent fraud.
App
On the app, we collect information about the device you use, such as:
• The phone model
• The operating system
• The language
• The geographic location
• The session duration
How is your information stored?
We use a trusted partner — TextIt — to store your poll responses, chatbot interactions, and registration information. TextIt is contractually obliged to protect your data in a way similar to us.
Your responses may also be stored in the chat of the app you use (e.g. WhatsApp or Facebook). If you responded to a poll on a sensitive topic, you may consider deleting the conversation to protect your privacy.
How long does U-Report On The Move keep your information?
We keep your personal information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, or to comply with legal obligations.
How and why may U-Report On The Move share your information?
Keeping your information confidential is important to us. We generally only share non-personal and aggregate information — that is, general data that does not identify any individual person.
We may share aggregate data with:
• UNICEF partners and UNICEF Country Offices, to support youth engagement and inform local decisions and projects.
• Third-party service providers who help us manage the website, analyse data or send emails.
The limited personal information we hold is shared only in exceptional circumstances and for specific, necessary purposes:
• With your permission, for example if you need urgent assistance.
• To comply with a legal obligation, or to protect someone's rights, privacy or safety.
Any third party that gains access to personal information is contractually obliged to have data protection and privacy safeguards similar to ours.
How secure is your information?
We use many measures — physical and electronic — to protect your personal information from unauthorised access. However, we cannot guarantee 100% that your information will always be completely secure.
Here are some things you can do to protect yourself:
• Use a PIN code or password to access your phone. Do not use your date of birth or name.
• Use a strong password for the apps you use to send messages to U-Report On The Move. Do not share your password with anyone.
• Be careful when connecting to U-Report On The Move using public Wi-Fi networks, which can be insecure.
• Enable the feature that allows you to erase all data from your device if it is lost or stolen.
What are your rights as a U-Report On The Move user?
You have the following rights:
• The right to request your personal information stored on the U-Report On The Move server. You can change it, delete it, or refuse its use. To do this, send MYDATA through any U-Report On The Move channel.
• The right to be informed about your rights when using U-Report On The Move.
• The right to request deletion of your registration and stored data at any time. To do this, send DELETEME through any U-Report On The Move channel.
• The right to decide whether or not to participate in polls.
To request your data: send MYDATA To delete your data: send DELETEME To leave the platform: send QUIT
How can you stop using U-Report On The Move and delete your information?
You have the right to request deletion of your registration and stored information at any time. To do so, send QUIT through any U-Report On The Move channel (Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram or Viber). We periodically remove contacts who have chosen to leave the platform.
Changes to the Privacy Policy
We periodically review our security measures and this Privacy Policy. If we make changes, we will post a notification on our website. Changes will take effect immediately upon publication. We encourage you to check this policy regularly. Your continued use of the site after any changes means you accept the updated Privacy Policy.
